ISOBUS & CAN-BUS

Digi-Star & Dinamica Generale

CAN-BUS vs ISOBUS

Two words that get used together. One is the wiring; the other is the standard that runs on it.

CAN-BUS

The wiring backbone

Load cells, indicators, and modules share one twisted-pair network instead of a separate wire run to each device. Fewer connectors, less to fail, and any node can talk to any other. J1939 is the agricultural / heavy-equipment flavor of CAN.

ISOBUS

One display, any implement

A standard (ISO 11783) built on top of CAN so any compliant implement runs through the tractor's own in-cab screen — the Universal / Virtual Terminal. One display runs several implements, and the Task Controller logs job and yield data. No second monitor stuck to the cab glass.

Digi-Star / Topcon

ISOBUS indicator

Most Digi-Star feed indicators talk over Bluetooth or serial, not ISOBUS. The one ISOBUS piece in the line is the 2010 BT convertor, which lets a mixer run on the tractor's own terminal.

2010 BT Convertor

ISO-UT

Digi-Star's ISOBUS piece: it makes an automatic-loading feed mixer run straight on the tractor's ISOBUS Universal Terminal, so the tractor's own screen is the indicator — no separate weigh head on the cab glass.

Typical useAuto-load feed mixers driven from an ISOBUS tractor terminal.

Dinamica Generale (DG)

ISOBUS indicators

DG builds ISOBUS straight into these two indicators — the on-board DG400 and the DG8000-IC feed computer.

DG400 / SB-ECU

ISOBUSCAN J1939

On-board weight indicator with ISOBUS and CAN J1939 built in as standard. Six-digit LCD, tare / alarm keys, overload protection, and a weight-freeze function for weighing on the move. Reads load cells from any maker.

Typical useManure & fertilizer spreaders, balers, seed tenders, forage wagons, grain carts, planters.

DG8000-IC

ISOBUS

The advanced feed-mixer computer, ISOBUS version (the “IC”). 48 recipes of up to 24 components, 96 animal pens, dry-matter-based formulation, premix & refusal tracking, and automatic mixing-time control.

Typical useLarger, recipe-driven feeding operations on an ISOBUS tractor.

What to know before you mix brandsISOBUS is a standard, so a compliant DG or Digi-Star implement is designed to run on any ISOBUS tractor's Universal Terminal — but feature coverage (AUX controls, Task Controller, certified functions) varies by tractor and by implement. CAN J1939 is the lower-level bus underneath. When you're matching an implement to a tractor, confirm the exact ISOBUS functions each side supports rather than assuming full plug-and-play. We can check a specific pairing for you.

Only ISOBUS indicators are listed above. Other familiar models — Digi-Star 2810 / 3410 / 4610 BT, RD-series remote displays, the CL-55 data module, and DG500 / 600 — connect by Bluetooth, serial, or plain CAN and are not ISOBUS. The Digi-Star GT460 / GT560 grain-cart indicators use USB / serial / WiFi / cellular, not ISOBUS.
