If your scale is reading incorrectly, drifting, or showing zero, the problem is usually a load cell (weigh bar), moisture in a connector, or a damaged cable — not the indicator or the app. Work through these steps in order before replacing any parts.

Step 1: Check for moisture first

Moisture in the connectors and junction boxes is the single most common cause of a scale that drifts, reads negative, or acts erratic — especially after rain. Before anything else, unplug your connectors and junction box and look for water, corrosion, or green residue. Dry every connector fully and reseat them. Many “bad load cell” calls are fixed right here.

Step 2: Isolate the hitch from the axles

To find which cell is causing the trouble, isolate the sections. Unplug the hitch cell and see if the reading stabilizes, then do the same for the axles. This tells you whether the fault is at the hitch or at one of the axle cells. The right-rear axle cell is a common culprit.

Step 3: Test the individual cells

Once you have narrowed it to a section, test the individual load cells for their millivolt-per-volt output. A cell that reads far off from the others is your bad one. Important: when you replace a cell, match the millivolt-per-volt output of the others (Topcon and Digi-Star style cells are common on these systems). Mismatched output will throw the whole system off.

Step 4: Check the cable

A pinched, cut, or shorted cable can mimic a bad load cell. Inspect cable runs for damage, especially at pinch points and where cables flex. A short here can produce the same wrong or drifting readings as a failed cell.
